OUR EXSISTENCE
“NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION.”
Ananse Arts was created out of both necessity and a stark lack of having authentic black owned, managed, led and developed media institutions. Perception is important to building confidence, stability, pride in one’s self and one’s background and Simone wanted to create an outlet that would use the mediums of Theatre, Film and Television to create stories that authentically identify with the black community, whilst being able to challenge and uplift the individuals within.
Ananse Arts is a culmination of the need to create strong, relatable characters with strong storylines that move away from the mainstream stereotype. Ananse Arts embodies the characteristics of its name sake Ananse, by providing content that will entertain, educate and engage audiences by using the mind as a tool to change and delight the Black community. Ananse Arts seeks to create programming, events and entertainment that deliver cultural and traditional themes appropriate to the Black community, whilst exploring all the issues and problems faced both inside the community from different aspects, as well as the issues faced outside of the community. Ananse Arts will be creating programming for Travel junkies, Theatrical Plays, Short Films, Property shows, Dramas, Talk shows, Finance and Lifestyle shows, Social and Political Debates, Science and Technology, Comedy shows and skits, a variety of Children’s shows, Caribbean Food shows and Culture shows. It’s important for our community to see people who look like them excelling, sharing, investigating and making great moves within a variety of careers and having fun whilst doing it.
“LEARN TO DANCE AT HOME, BEFORE YOU GO OUT TO DANCE”
“OUT OF MANY PEOPLE, WE ARE ONE”
Ananse Arts will employ Black writers, actors, crew and is managed by people within the black Afro-Caribbean and African communities. Many black creatives do not get the opportunity to work within their chosen fields regularly and when they do, many of the jobs on offer are entry level or short term and never give them the ability to excel into greater positions. Ananse Arts wants to become one of the main providers of employment for creatives within the Black community in the UK and around the world.
Ananse Arts wants to become a stalwart and champion for Black expression, creativity, protest, discussion and celebration, whilst empowering as many people as we can reach. Embracing everything about the black identity that may be deemed unprofessional or inappropriate in other arenas of employment.
